The workshop on “Pesticides – Effects on Health and the environment” was held successfully today, Friday, December 2, 2016, at the Elisso hotel in Xanthi, co-organized by the Regional Unit of Xanthi of the Region of Eastern Macedonia & Thrace, the Soroptimist Club of Xanthi and Europe Direct Xanthi.
The workshop program was opened by Ms. M. Gkatziou, Associate Professor at DUTh, on the effects of pesticides on the environment.
She was followed by agronomist Dimitris Bardakidis, Development Consultant at ena Development Consultants and Head of Europe Direct Xanthi, whose presentation focused on environmental protection as a prerequisite of the EU Common Agricultural Policy.
Next came Associate Professor at DUTh Ms. Aik. Alexiou, with her presentation on environmental and occupational exposure to pesticides: data for the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace; Dr. K. Fylaktakidou, on farmers' exposure to hazardous chemicals: risk analysis and precautionary measures; and Dr. E. Bezirtzoglou with Dr. A. Alexopoulos, who analyzed health and safety in farm work.
The presentations concluded with Dr. E. Nena, who covered accident response and prevention, poisonings and first aid.
A discussion with the agronomists and farmers present followed.
